Plans moving forward to build resort at I-85 Exit #1

The project has been in the works since 2008. PRT director Duane Parrish Parrish says that by spring the tourism department hopes to have a lease agreement signed with developers and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which owns the land. From there, Parrish says it's hard to predict how long it will take to break ground.

Peregrine falcon pair at Jocassee Gorges fledges two birds for fourth year in a row

In 2008, a pair of peregrine falcons chose Jumping-Off Rock within the Jocassee Gorges as their new nest site. The S.C. Department of Natural Resources was ecstatic about the addition, which felt like a jewel in the crown of the upstate. Amazingly, the peregrines have fledged two juveniles for four years in a row now.

Hartwell Lake visitor’s center to close temporarily on weekends

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Savannah District will temporarily close the visitor’s centers on weekends and federal holidays at Hartwell Dam and Lake and Richard B. Russell Dam and Lake, beginning Nov. 26 through March 3. The weekend closures are a result of declining winter visitation numbers at the lakes.
