Hartwell Lake visitor’s center to close temporarily on weekends

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Savannah District will temporarily close the visitor’s centers on weekends and federal holidays at Hartwell Dam and Lake and Richard B. Russell Dam and Lake, beginning Nov. 26 through March 3. The weekend closures are a result of declining winter visitation numbers at the lakes.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Hartwell Project Office has re-opened the Stephens County Recreation Area, in Stephens County, Ga., following the repair of a collapsed portion of the park entrance road.

Lake Hartwell Expected to Fall 7 feet by 8/20/2011

Today 6/10/2011 Lake Hartwell is at a level of 659.56 or about 5-1/4 inchesbelow FULL. The Corps is projecting a level of 653 or 7 feet below full by August 20. The actual lake level may vary from the projections due to rainfall, heat, humidity and other factors.

Lake Hartwell Discharge Rate to Remain at Current Levels

Carters Ferry & Cleveland ramps temporarily close for repaving

Weather permitting, these areas should re-open August 28.Visitors displaced during this time are encouraged to use nearby recreation areas. New fishing pier to re-open below Hartwell Dam

Billy Birdwell, a spokesman for the Savannah District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, said the existing pier was closed after September 11, 2001 because vehicular access was too close to the powerhouse of the dam. That vehicular access has become employee parking.
