“Rx for Fitness” is part of Ga State Park system’s new Tons of Fun Fitness Challenge which encourages citizens to use outdoor recreation as part of their regular exercise. Park visitors may find that exploring a canyon is more fun than a step machine, and that hiking along a waterfall burns more calories than a treadmill.

Jocassee Gorges roads to open Sept. 15

For the fifth year in a row, all the Jocassee Gorges main access roads will be opened as planned on Thursday, Sept. 15. Roads will remain open until Jan. 15, 2012. The roads will open again in spring 2012 from March 20 through May 10.

Adelgids are aphid-like insects almost microscopic in size. Their life cycle produces two generations per year amounting to as many as 300 eggs per adelgid. When hatched from the eggs, the nymph adelgid uses their thread-like mouthpart to pierce a hemlock branch at each needle and suck the nutrients from the branch. Adults, as well as the nymphs, actively suck the life out of the hemlock causing the hemlock needles to dry out and drop. The tree can die in 3-5 years if left untreated.

Nope, it’s not the North Pole; it’s “Lights of Hope.” The annual light show has been illuminating Darwin Wright Park in Anderson South Carolina at Christmas with its 7/10ths-mile drive thru display of over a million multi-colored lights for 16 years.
